Ugh

posted by admin admin on Tue, Aug 31, 2010 [18:46 UTC]
Well, we did manage to lose some stuff from the past few days in the last round of "upgrade, OH CRAP, restore from backups." For some reason, the latest backup just refused to work, so I had to restore from a previous one.

That's enough banging my head against mySQL and php for a while. Back to the standard monotony.

If you see anything that doesn't appear to be working right, let me know. There are a few things in the admin stuff that are broken that I can't seem to fix. When I get the conversion logic working locally, I'll make another attempt.

Then again, if there's nothing on the site that you don't mind losing permanently (and it will be PERMANENT, because I'm not even trying some "convert an old db and MERGE it with the new one"), then I can just make a blind upgrade. Leave a comment with your thoughts. Since all of two people are active, I'll leave the decision up to you.

RSS Feeds

posted by admin admin on Sun, Aug 22, 2010 [13:19 UTC]
I'm in the process of enabling RSS feeds for certain parts of the site. ("In the process" really means "I already did it".) If you like newfangled things like RSS and desire to have a feed in a particular part of the site, LET ME KNOW.

Blue!

posted by admin admin on Fri, Feb 22, 2008 [13:50 UTC]
I've mostly finished the blue style. I have to say that I like it a lot better than that gray. The default style for the site has been changed to the blue. If you still see the gray after you login, you can change it in your preferences.

To finish the blue, I'll be adding a gradient image for the top of blogs and some other places. I'm wondering if I need to change the menu caps. They don't look so bad with the blue.

Yarr! Thar be colors!

posted by admin admin on Thu, Feb 21, 2008 [15:09 UTC]
Be prepared for ugliness for the next couple of days. I'm playing with the default style. At the moment, I can't decide between shades of gray and...well, I sort of like the blue. Sort of.

I know some people go for colors that express themselves. Personally, I'm just trying to find a set of colors with enough contrast to be readable, but not so much that you're staring into a lightbulb. Shades of gray accomplishes this pretty well. Blue can be difficult, since lighter text can look better on darker shades of blue. In comparision, black text pretty much goes on any shade of gray. Shades of brown is my third option, but it seems people have a strong feeling towards shades of brown. You either hate it or love it (where 'love it' really means that it seems natural). The one thing I really don't want is black-on-white...or any white at all. Like I said, no staring into lightbulbs please.

I might change things to weird colors every once in a while just to see where that color is used. If you see anything that looks terribly out of place, let me know. When I'm done, there will probably be three styles to choose from: shades of grey, shades of blue, and shades of brown.

And if anyone can tell me what in the world 'content templates' are and how to use them, that'd be awesome.

Version: The Next Day

posted by admin admin on Thu, Feb 21, 2008 [00:43 UTC]
Notice the absence of the image galleries. With 500 MB total, hosting images isn't really feasible. Maybe another time.

After more thought, I hate the blue thing at the top of the blog. And the brown looks a bit out of place. Anyway, I'm going to enable user styles so that each user can pick one. I don't know if you'll be able to edit them, but we'll see.

And It Starts...

posted by admin admin on Wed, Feb 20, 2008 [02:41 UTC]
It's been a couple of days since opening up TheAwesomeFiles. I'm still poking into things to make sure everything is usable. Here's what we've got so far:
  • Configurable stuff at MyTiki. You can edit your profile, setup bookmarks, and play around with modules. (BTW, 'modules' may sound intimidating, but they're really just the widgets in the left and right menus.) Depending upon permissions, you may be able to send messages to other users and create your own user wiki page.
  • The wiki is pretty much set up. Creators of pages have admin rights to that page. Discussion of pages goes into separate threads in the Wiki forum. I like the collaborative format of showing all contributors to a page. It gives me warm fuzzies.
  • Image galleries are available. I wouldn't be surprised if they disappear. Don't get used to them.
  • Blogs are also ready to use. Go nuts.
  • There's a forum. It can be used.
  • I finally figured out how to enable the calendar. It's there.
Now, about permissions. I've tried to keep everything as modular as possible, partially for convenience and partially to lay the smack down. Let's face it: I hate trying to actually use the wiki while having a left menu that scrolls far off the page with all this admin crap. So, if there's something you want to use, post a comment here and I'll enable it for you.

There really is a ton of stuff that can be enabled. If there are any features you'd like to see, feel free to ask about it. Chances are I can probably find it somewhere in here.

Expect the colors to continue to change. After fixing that pretty hideous shade of blue for category labels, I'll probably continue to tweak the main style to something less likely to give everyone eyestrain. Pretty? Probably not. Easy on the eyes? That's what I'm shooting for. Suggestions are welcome. (Come to think of it, I kind of like that blue up there.)
